About the different project management methods

While Scrum has been the de-facto standard for pretty much everything IT and software. In the past 20 years. It has some dark edges that tend to be overlooked. And if you’re not careful you can end up paying the bill for never ending sprint cycles and mediocre products. “People love chopping wood, with this activity they immediately get results”. Albert Einstein This is part of the appeal of the Scrum method. You can always fill a sprint with a bunch of tasks, that will be finished at the end. This provides a sense of control. And a creates a positive feedback loop. You grab a bunch of items, assign an imaginary 'value' ( story points) to each item. And then just watch your burn down chart, as you're delivering massive value. Don't get me wrong, this system is excellent for operational / medium sized tasks. For larger tasks it's usually beneficial to implement a more 'classic' project management method (Prince2, SDM, IPMA, etc) as an 'overlay' to your sprint cycles. The art of making this lies in how you break these major components down in chunks to feed your sprint cycles while balancing the overall throughput and dependencies. And this is where hands on technical knowledge in a project manager ads major value.
